The sleek military helicopter soared through the clear blue sky. The aircraft was a magnificent sight as the early afternoon sun glinted off its silver-grey exterior, but the numerous missiles and rockets that adorned its underside revealed its true nature.

The helicopter was cruising high over a bustling coastal city. The land rolled down steeply towards a wide ocean bay. In the centre of the bay was the chopper's destination: a small, heavily forested island, which was home to a high security military base.

The pilot glanced over his shoulder at his captive. Piercing green eyes glared back at him from the shadowy interior. The pilot turned away smiling confidently. It seemed that HQ had overestimated the hedgehog. They had sent twenty fully equipped men and double that number of GUNbots to apprehend the escapee. The soldiers had been told to exercise extreme caution when approaching the target. Every one of them was expecting a fight. The hedgehog gave none. It had surrendered, albeit reluctantly, almost immediately. In fact, reflected the pilot, it had seemed confused as to why they were after it. Almost as if it didn't remember its escape from the compound, completely destroying an eight hundred thousand dollar "Hot Shot" model in the process. Perhaps it didn't remember. Perhaps it was mentally unstable, schizophrenic. Perhaps that lunatic professor wasn't as brilliant as everyone made him out, and his creation wasn't as perfect as once thought.

Perfect life form or not, it was perfectly helpless now. Brash and defiant earlier, it now stood in sombre silence, leaning against the rear bulkhead. Its hands were cuffed in front of it, and it scowled at its three human and two robotic guards who kept their weapons trained upon it warily.

The pilot began his descent over the city towards the island. He flicked a switch on the console and adjusted his helmet-mounted microphone.

"Sigma-Alpha-Two heading due south over the city," he said into the mike. "We're en route, everything's a go. Over."

"This is Control Tower," came the tinny reply. "We have you on radar."

Sonic the Hedgehog saw his chance. He didn't know what he had been accused of, or where they were taking him, but he knew that he was innocent. And he knew that he had to make his escape.

The armed guards had become momentarily distracted by the radio conversation. He still had the full attention of the two eight foot tall GUNbots, but that was okay-he smiled to himself-he could handle robots.

"Report cargo status of captured hedgehog aboard, over," continued the voice from the radio.

"That's a 10-4. Cargo secured on board and..." The pilot looked over his shoulder as he spoke. "What the hell?!" he exclaimed suddenly.

"Didn't copy that, over."

"The hedgehog is gone!"

The hedgehog had indeed gone. Faster than the guards could react, Sonic had smashed both robots, sent the three men sprawling to the floor, and, by vibrating his hands to supersonic frequencies, shaken loose the locking mechanism of his shackles.

The pilot screamed frantically into the radio: "He's taken out everyone aboard and..."

Sonic took step back, flashed a devilish grin at the pilot and launched himself at the door.

"What in the world?!" shouted the dumbfounded man as the powerful somersault sent the door flying off its hinges and spinning through the open air. Sonic tumbled out after it, twisting his body around and reaching out to grab onto something before the slipstream swept him away. His hand found a rocket fixture on the underside of the aircraft's stubby wing, and there he hung, the wind whistling through his blue quills.

He looked down and saw the helicopter door spinning end over end towards the city streets far below. He looked up and squinted as the whirring rotor blades blew a gale into his face. Sonic carefully judged the distance and then flipped his body upwards, his brand new Soap sneakers narrowly missing the deadly blades. He landed neatly on top of the wing, ducking instinctively as the rotor roared above his head.

The pilot had regained some of his composure, and through the hurricane around his ears, Sonic could vaguely hear him shouting. He ignored him and hooked his fingers over the edge of the wing, bracing his feet against the sturdy metal. In one sharp tug he tore the wing flap from the vehicle.

"Talk about low budget flights!" he remarked as he prepared his makeshift sky-board. "No food or movies? I'm outta here!" He stepped onto the metal slat. "I like running better," announced the hedgehog as he flipped backwards off the wing and spiralled down towards the city.

He knew that it was highly likely that he was plummeting towards severe injury or even death. He knew that GUN reinforcements were probably on their way this very second to recapture him. He realised the severity of the situation. But he couldn't help himself... "Yeah!" he shouted in the sheer adrenaline rush of the moment.
